Neighbourhood

Since the original refugee camp was built there has been an explosion of the population density. The housing conditioned structures in the camp were initially built for 10,000 people and nowadays 32,000 people live in just over 1 km2.

Around the original camp surface of 1 km2 there is a camp widening of additional 3 km2 rather called “the neighborhood” that consists of three new areas of additional population hosting the second and third generation which no longer fit into the original camp.

The neighborhood consists of three sectors, Ras Hamis with 15,000 inhabitants, Ras Shehada with 15,000-18,000 inhabitants and Dahyt Salam with 18,000-20,000 inhabitants. In total, the neighborhood has 56,000 people, which together with the inhabitants of the original camp, sum a total of more than 85,000 people in about 4 km2.
